Authors Notes

Hugh C. Rogers, MD knows the canyons and the rock art. Hugh continues to study and write about the people who left us this remarkable legacy. Dr. Rogers completed the field research, and took many of the photographs found on the CDs.

Wade Corder developed the data base system. Daniel Hise authored the CD and programmed data files.

Dale Anderson has photographed and filmed Native America for 30 years. He finds the Dinetah one of the least appreciated historic sites in the West. Dale is a principal in Aztec Media Corporation, which provided the technical expertise and management services.

Funds to complete this project were provided by the BLM under the direction of Jim Copeland. Mr. Copeland was very helpful in the design and documentation of this project. His knowledge of the canyons and the peoples who left us their art is remarkable.

Project Description

Largo Canyon is in the heart of Dinetah, the Navajo name for the birthplace of Navajo culture. Largo Canyon is a major drainage in the San Juan Basin, which is located in Northwest New Mexico, USA.

The rock art of Largo Canyon drainage is unique. It contains the earliest rock art images of Spanish contact with native peoples of the Colorado Plateau: representing both Navajo and Anasazi cultures. There are several hundred panels of Navajo and Anasazi petroglyphs and dozens of pictograph panels containing several thousand individual figures. Most pictographs are 17th century Navajo.

The eight CD set contains 160 images from 3 side canyons: Crow, Delgadito, and Blanco Canyons. To the best of the photographer/authors knowledge, all the rock art located in these canyons are documented. Each photograph carries a unique 8-digit number that locates the rock art panel.
